Stripies

So a few weeks ago I was hanging out with my friend Cassie and we decided to paint some canvases that she had to decorate her kitchen. We also decided to use up her masking tape for our designs. I painted this stripey cat picture. It was a technique I used a lot in undergrad and forgot how much I enjoyed it.

Then, when I was about to start another similar painting, I thought to myself... "I bet I could do this on the computer way faster and easier." It was true.

Stripey Bear
I made this bear picture in Illustrator in less than 15 minutes. Later, while hanging out with Cassie again, I showed her how easy it was to make by making another one for her in a record 5 minutes (possibly less).
Stripey Fox
So then I went all out and spent a good chunk of time working on a Stripey Crab. But I saved every stripe as a separate file so that I could put a movie together of how I made it.

Sneak Peak Reception Sept. 28th

Our Sneak Peak show at Moore is up! Swing by and check out all the work that was inspired by our time in Ireland. There will be a reception on the last day of the show: Friday, Sept. 28th at 6:00pm!

If you gave me a scar, you can find it in my Scar Collection filing cabinet

Birds that Tweet!

My professor, Christopher McManus, showed me this awesome project. It's a totally tech-savvy version of my bird seed project. (These birds had a lot more to say!)

Qualifying review!

So after 4 weeks in Ireland (which still has blog posts of its own to go up... keep checking back, I'll get them all up eventually!) and two intense weeks in HOT Philly, we all got together for our final critique of the semester... out qualifying review.

The project I focused on the most was my Scar Collection... which has grown to a total of 67 scars (not including the ones I collected from people during or after the crits)

The work was received really well and I got a lot of great suggestions, feedback and more scar stories! Next step, get it set up for Sneak Peak!

Scar Collection

In my studio I started with work about my own stitches and thought about making work revolving around my scar, once it developed. But in working through ideas about my own scar, I started asking other people about their scars. That's when I started a project based on collecting the scars (and their stories) form others.

As I talk to more people and learn about more and more scars my collection has grown. I'm still thinking through the final display, but I'm loving the project so far.

Happy Independence Day (America)

So today is the 4th of July, everywhere in the world... but it's only Independence Day in America! The Irish have something in common with Americans, they will use any excuse to celebrate! So we had an American style BBQ at school today complete with hamburgers on the grill, star and stripes, and cowboy hats. The weather was even nice enough that we could eat outside, picnic style. Robert found a fantastic star spangled apron to wear while he grilled our burgers and Joe found an awesome red white and blue child's cowboy hat to wear. Enjoy the video that Naomi took.

ps - I bought that rainbow sweater in the Aran Islands from children's section. I wear it almost every day.

Possible Instillation?

These things are hung up in my studio space. Martha suggested that they could work as an instillation. I think I like this idea :)
